Supporting the Social and Communication and Academic Engagement of Children with Autism

Emily Rubin, MS, CCC-SLP, a speech and language pathologist specializing in autism, will share her wide range of experience related to supporting social communication and academic engagement of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Emily is a director at the Marcus Autism Center at Emory University and has worked with ASHA to develop guidelines related to the role of the SLP in the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder. She is a co-author of the SCERTS model.

The presentation will focus on supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the development of communication skills within a social context that promotes student engagement, positive social interactions and successful peer relationships. The identification of meaningful, functional and evidence-based objectives in social communication and self regulation will be emphasized. Strategies introduced will focus on supporting the development of functional communication, social interaction and self-regulation. Transactional supports that maximize learning and positive relationships across home, school and community settings will also be presented.
