Students learn from all their interactions in our schools-whether the lessons are intentional or unintentional. Whether we like it or not, educators teach race and all its realities. Students have recently used social media to highlight the realities of their racialized experiences in school lunchrooms, hallways and classrooms. In fact, students and their parents have highlighted the written and unwritten school policies and practices that have assisted and maintained racialized dysfunction perpetrated by pedagogical and discipline practices.
In Partnerships with the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, State Support Team 11 will offer a two-part professional learning opportunity for school leaders and educators. In order to be culturally responsive, we must first be culturally aware and sensitive to the historical experiences of certain student populations. The first two sessions of the series are designed to increase educator’s knowledge related to how race has been used as a tool for exclusion in education and as individuals and educators how we personally refashion those tools. We will unpack how certain practices impact our Black students and their families. This professional development is geared toward administrators and educators. The February session is especially beneficial for teacher.
