The 2022 R.A. Horn Outstanding Student Achievement Award is presented to a school-aged student with a disability for exceptional accomplishments and contributions to the community.
This year’s recipient goes to Kya Miles, a senior at Fort Hayes High Metropolitan Education Center. Kya has demonstrated a passion for educating others on disability awareness and diversity acceptance. She brings attention to these topics through her YouTube channel, Wheels & Wisdom, and her own organization, Kya’s Krusade. The videos created for Wheels & Wisdom help ignite conversation to break the stigma and misinformation around individuals with disabilities. Kya’s Krusade is a resource center that specializes in serving families affected by Arthrogryposis and other less-publicized physical disabilities.
Additionally, Kya is very involved in extracurricular activities, volunteering, and community service. Some of the events Kya has participated in include Patient Ambassador at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the annual Fort Hayes Food Drive, the Childhood League Service Learning Project, the Columbus Commission on Black Girls survey, the F.O.R.T Store Drive, the Youth Leadership Forum, and the training for Canine Companions. During her time at Fort Hayes, she has completed multiple A.P (advanced placement) courses in English and U.S. Government, interned at the Shot Tower Gallery art gallery, and is an active member of the National Honor Society.
Kya Miles is a dedicated scholar and humanitarian with a mission in life to continue to help others recognize biases and help remove the stigmas and barriers for individuals with physical disabilities. She is the perfect candidate for this award not only for all of her accomplishments but because of her kind heart and determination.
